These center activities are a great way to get your students thinking about and working with words. Once students are trained, this is an easy, low-prep center that can be adjusted to any sight word or spelling list.
This Pack Includes-
Manila Envelope Cover
Manila Folder Cover
Letters and Syllables Clue Sheet
Comparing Words Clue Sheet
Solving Recording Sheet (2 sizes)
Mystery Word Revealer Sheet
Write Your Own Clues Recording Sheets (2 sizes)
Set Up and Use-
Print out one of the Manila Covers and glue to a manila envelope or folder. Print out the desired Clue Sheet on cardstock and laminate, or insert into a plastic page protector. Print and copy the recording sheets for each student. Choose a mystery word from a spelling list or the word wall. Using a dry erase marker, fill in the clues on the clue sheet (leave some of them blank to make it more challenging!) Leave the envelope, clues sheet and recording sheets on a desk or table for students to use during center time. Students will read the clues and then fill out the recording sheet for the mystery word. Then, they turn in their sheets to the “Top Secret” folder when finished. After centers have finished, reveal the mystery word and the students will be excited to know if they solved the case!
This activity can be reversed with the “Write Your Own Clues” recording sheets and Mystery Word Revealer. Choose a mystery word, and write it on the Mystery Word Revealer. Slip it into the Top Secret folder. Students can peek at the word, put it back in the folder, and then must write their own clues for the word.
Use the Book Word Hunt as an extension or fast finisher during center time!
Happy Mystery Solving!
