I love coming up with fun ways for my students to practice word work during centers and this is the latest popular center in my class! It combines identifying initial sounds, sounding out words and finding the matching picture.
Students have an alphabet chart, which they may or may not need to refer to. They look at the picture clues and identify the initial sounds and letters of each word. They put the letter that each picture starts with underneath until they have spelled out a word. Then they sound out the word and identify the picture. On the back of my picture, I wrote the word so that they can check their answers.
You can use any sort of letters with these cards - personally I cut foam paper into 1" squares and wrote letters on them but magnetic letters would work, or you could have the students use dry erase markers to write on them.
This is sure to become a popular center in your class, as students try to solve the puzzles - learning and fun all at the same time? How can you beat that!
