Mystery Words is a making words activity aimed at meeting the Common Core State Standards in the area of Kindergarten and First Grade Phonological Awareness and Phonics and Word Recognition.
This is a great activity for individual and small group instruction. It is also perfect for literacy centers and reading intervention.
Mystery Words has everything a teacher needs to implement the activities. There are materials to cover each of the short vowel sounds a, e, i, o and u. Also included are the long vowel combinations ai, oa, ea, ee, ue and ending-e long vowels a, o, i and u.
How does it work?
A student opens a bag that is labeled with a specific vowel sound. Inside the bag is a set of tiles that can be put together in different combinations to make words with the vowel sound. When each word is made, the student sounds out each phoneme and then reads the word. Then they write the word on a recording sheet.
