Halloween is a great time of year to “fall” into a creative writing unit! Every year I do a version of the following mystery/Halloween projects and it is voted as the favorite unit by my students time and time again. Students create their own Potent Potions, Epitaphs and Haunted House Advertisements based on Three Edgar Allan Poe Stories read! Best part is that it doesn’t require my students responding to prompts. These can be used for grades one through twelve with hilarious and varying results, and it would only require minimal changes. For example, you can do this unit without reading the Poe stories for the primary grades; for upper elementary using a Poe version more appropriate for these grades works well; and, for middle school you can use the original Poe stories.
This unit contains:
3 sets of postcards as background knowledge activity, which are aligned to each Poe story (Poe stories not included).
Three mystery projects templates/assignments, which can be completed along with each story or independent of the Poe stories with accompanying rubrics.
Edgar Allan Poe Virtual Field Trip Tickets and Questionnaire
Graphic organizers and word bank as aides for completing the projects.
