Exposure to this rich Myths and Legends unit not only addresses important reading comprehension skills, but it fills critical gaps in the 4th grade and 5th grade reading programs adopted by most schools.
Included in this packet are ten wonderful and diverse myths and legends including Native American, Canadian, and Greek mythology. Students will engage in comprehension activities such as cause and effect, inferences, compare and contrast, problem solving, drawing conclusions, determining story themes (morals), identifying important facts, using context clues, sequencing events, identifying important details, summarizing. The rich stories and questioning strategies help students improve important reading comprehension skills. Full answer keys and graphic organizers are included.
The articles are written on 4th to 5th grade reading levels (9 and 10 years old). They can be used with younger or older kids as determined by their skill level. The activities are great for whole group, small group, individuals, centers, and homework applications. Pages in the packet can be printed either in color or grayscale with good results. These activities are effective as a homeschool or summer reading resource.
Questions and Topics Addressed in this Resource
The myths, legends, and activities in this resource can be used as an assessment tool to test upper elementary students in grade 3, 4, or 5 on their comprehension skill levels. The exercises, problems, and activities on the printable worksheets adhere to common core standards in the U.S and other standards elsewhere. The myths and legends unit can be a great supplement to district and state curriculum requirements and are easily adaptable to existing lesson plans.
