NARRATIVE WRITING: INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK
To weave a compelling story is indeed an Art in its own kind and with the structured and scaffolded lessons this unit offers, your students will be able to do just that. Lessons in part I of this unit focus on identifying the structure and features of a narrative. Mini lessons target use of transitions, description, figurative language, and dialogue to control pacing, in addition to effective ways to begin and conclude narratives. The provided narrative writing sample is editable giving you the flexibility to customize this unit to suit your students’ learning needs.

Part II of this unit focuses on analyzing and responding to a narrative prompt by drawing up a checklist and making a plan. Students have a choice to write their first draft on recording sheets or a flipbook/interactive notebook style template. They refer to the VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, Punctuation) handouts when writing and color code their written draft when editing. Students also refer to the self-editing and peer editing checklists after they’ve completed their draft. They then have the option of typing out their finished written piece. A Teacher Marking rubric will enable you to assess their written work.

Further details for each section of this unit are outlined below:
NARRATIVE WRITING PART I
IDENTIFYING THE STRUCTURE AND FEATURES OF A NARRATIVE

Lessons revolve around the sample personal narrative, ‘The Storm’. Students will identify the elements of a plot, use of figurative language, transitions, dialogue, and opening, body, and concluding paragraphs. They de-structure the parts of a narrative and note use of interesting vocabulary. An assessment sheet is also provided to assess comprehension.

USING TRANSITION WORDS AND PHRASES TO MANAGE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS
Notebook template for students to practice combining sentences using time transitions and thought transitions.

DESCRIPTION AND FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE TO SLOW DOWN PACE OF STORY
4 X 4 flap templates for students to record descriptive sentences using figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification, adjectives) on given visuals.

VIVID WORDS
1 x 4 flap template for students to record more interesting words for some common
Words.

DIALOGUE IN WRITING
8 rules to teach dialogue in writing exercise sheets and 1 x 6 flap notebook templates for students to practice punctuating dialogue in a narrative.

ANALYZE A NARRATIVE PROMPT – mini booklet
Students analyze a given prompt and use the interactive template to draw up a checklist of everything that should be included in the final writing product based on the details of the prompt. They also brainstorm ideas for their story.

ORGANIZE A NARRATIVE SHORT STORY – 2x5 flap template
Students refer to the prompt checklist and brainstormed ideas to map story events on the Story Elements template. Story ideas are organized to make up the Exposition, Inciting Incident, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution.

DRAFTING AN INTRODUCTION – 1x 4 flap; 1x6 flap templates
Students practice writing the four ways to introduce a Narrative based on the writing prompt: Character Introduction, Setting, Action, and Dialogue. Six other narrative openings also included.

DRAFTING A CONCLUSION – 3flap circle template
Students identify the ending style of the written sample and use the interactive notebook template to practice writing the three ways of concluding a narrative: a personal reflection, shocking/surprising ending, and a new beginning on a given picture stimulus.

NARRATIVE WRITING PART II
Students use all the skills acquired in Part I of this Narrative Writing unit to respond to On – Demand Narrative Writing Prompts based on the third Common Core State Writing Standard that requires students to "write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well‐chosen details and well-structured event sequences.“ Students have the choice of responding to 7 prompts with visuals.

They use the given picture stimulus and graphic organizers to plan their writing and write their first draft. They will be familiar with this, having had ample practice in Narrative Writing Part I of this unit.

The first draft may be written on a notebook/flipbook style template or on provided lined sheets. Students then refer to the checklists to self edit and peer edit. They also refer to the VCOP handouts to draft, edit and color code their written piece.

USEFULNESS:
I planned this unit for my students after seeing how often they got carried away in their writing and lost track of the gist of what they wanted to convey. This unit provided them with a plan to follow, structure to adhere, and a purpose to narrate a compelling story.
