THIS RESOURCE IS INCLUDED IN THE BUNDLES:
NARRATIVE WRITING INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK
OPINION/NARRATIVE/BIOGRAPHY/INFORMATIONAL WRITING (GROWING) BUNDLE

Quite often when students write, they 'let the cat out of the bag' and give away the plot too quickly. This mini writing unit models how to build suspense by tightening tension in a narrative to make details more vivid and interesting. This technique can be applied to both personal and fictional narratives.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:
✓ A Cover Page featuring a quote. Use this if you are compiling all sheets in this unit
into a booklet.

✓ Sample personal narrative, ‘Water, water – Everywhere’ featuring figurative
language devices to build suspense and tighten tension.

✓ 21 constructive questions to analyze the text for meaning, figurative devices and
language style. Answer key included.

✓ One page cut and paste activity to focus on sequencing events via a short sample
text.

✓ Identifying tightening tension via a movie extract. Students scan the QR codes to
watch the videos and record details pertaining to sight, sound and feeling. Links
included. Please note that this is a youtube video. You can download
the QR Code scanner 'i-nigma' for free via google search.

✓ Writing a tightening tension scene. Students will use graphic organizers first to
brainstorm details.

✓ Graphic organizers x 9 to write the moment of action for given topics, story ideas
and writing on topics of choice.

✓ Writing a tension scene on a given picture prompt as a collaborative class activity.

I hope your students will be able to better understand the technique of tightening tension to build suspense with this unit as much as my students did.
All the best!
