NASA Spotlite Interactive Lessons are short lessons that address common science misconceptions as determined by reputable assessment sources such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), National Science Foundation (NSF) Factual Knowledge Questions, and the Misconceptions-Oriented Standards-based Assessment Resources for Teachers (MOSART). The focal point of the lessons are 90-120 second student-produced videos that are designed to correct a student misconception. NASA Spotlites are designed to increase scientific literacy in a standards-based classroom.
In this lesson (which accompanies the NASA Spotlite Lesson: Adaptation of Plants to Seasonal Change Teacher Guide), students will correct the common misconception that all plants die in the winter and are reborn in the spring. They will learn new vocabulary to develop their understanding of this scientific concept, and apply this vocabulary to explain that many plants have adaptations to survive cold winters.
