This is a writing activity I used in my 6th grade Math class. Students were first asked to describe what they knew about different cities in NC, the Mountains, Piedmont, and Coastal Plains and the activities that are popular there. They were then asked to pick 4 places they would like to go in NC, tell me how to get there on our coordinate plane, and describe why they wished to go there. Students then outlined how far they would travel to get back home. An additional activity would be to convert the distance traveled along the coordinate plane into miles.
This activity was a hit in my classroom for all levels of students. It allowed for a creative outlet and a break from some of the "Typical" graphing activities we had been doing.
