Product Description
Final Four, Sweet Sixteen, March Madness, the Big Dance. Every March, these terms pepper our conversation as focus shifts to the NCAA basketball tournament. Use the excitement surrounding this popular sporting event to engage students in activities that provide practice in writing revision, math, creative writing and reading comprehension. In addition, this resource contains a math activity and word puzzles, which are great for strengthening student focus and problem-solving abilities.

Activities in this packet include:

Reading Passage and Comprehension Questions: History of the tournament and accompanying comprehension questions

Revision Passage and questions: Text about the Gonzaga mascot and accompanying revision questions.

Informational Text and Four Square Follow-up: Text about North Carolina’s nickname and four related activities, including color-coded text evidence, illustrating, a math problem, and rhyme schemes and rhyme creation.

Basketball Idioms: Students use context clues to determine the meaning of common idioms derived from the game of basketball.

Creative Writing: Students will create an appropriate mascot for fictional Earhart University (named for Amelia Earhart), and will write a paragraph to describe the mascot and why they chose it. When done, they will illustrate their paragraph.

Two word searches: Find the NCAA teams and discover a hidden message.

Basketball Word-Go-Round: Solve the circular word puzzle where one word’s ending letter is the next word’s beginning letter.
