If you are looking for resources to meet the nonfiction requirements of Common Core for ELA, then this is for you. I have been teaching nonfiction reading using this text for years, and it is always one of our favorite units. The book is both an excellent example of quality nonfiction writing and highly engaging for middle school students. This product is a chapter by chapter student guide to support informational text Chew on This by Eric Schlosser. It is Common Core aligned requiring students to cite evidence from the text, trace and evaluate an argument, and analyze the author's writing style. Each section includes four components: a personal vocabulary chart, a Cornell Notes assignment, higher order thinking comprehension questions, and author's writing style analysis. Additionally, there is an emphasis on text structures (description, problem/solution, sequence, compare/contrast and cause/effect) and propaganda techniques (bandwagon, testimonial, scare tactics, glittering generalities, card stacking, and name calling) throughout the student guide. I will be posting the mini-lessons I teach that go along with this student guide soon. They include: introduction to propaganda, how and why to take Cornell notes, the 5 basic nonfiction text structures, context clues, and introduction to argument writing. If you purchase this product, I will send you notifications via TPT about these products as I upload them. I also have a Chew on This text feature scavenger hunt and a "Fast Food I.Q." survey I use at the beginning of my unit on TPT already. Enjoy!
