The Value of Coaching Language:
Coaching language is designed to help teachers get into the habit of reflecting on their teaching practices to make changes as needed in order to improve student success. Teacher reflection is key to change and student success. Coaching language is also a way to get teachers to consider other ideas and actions.
In the coaching language frames provided, you can easily modify what is there to your situations.
Here are some examples from the document:
15. I am looking for teachers who can help me reach other teachers since every teacher deserves the support of a coach, but I cannot get to everyone. Do you think you may be interested in this? It would me that we would work together closely so you can experience coaching in order to replicate it with others. What do you think?
18. What are your goals this year with your students? How can I help you reach your goals?
32. I have been working with a few teachers here on implementing a close reading. Everyone I have worked with has been so pleased with the improvements in student test scores, after using the approach, that I thought you may be interested in having me come in and model a close reading. Would you be up for that?
After an Observation:
44. Ms. Jones, your class demonstrated a high degree of learning today. I saw evidence of learning in that the Venn diagrams were completely filled out with information from the text that helped the students clearly see similarities and differences. Venn diagrams are such a great scaffolding tool that really benefit all students; one they can even use long-term. Have you thought about how you can ramp up the rigor with a Venn diagram? Have you considered having them use the information in the Venn diagram to create a written piece?
