Product Description

Grade 9-12: This comprehensive listening log can be used as students listen to any podcast episode. The file is editable so you have the ability to customize it to your classroom, but otherwise, it is classroom-ready and ZERO prep for you!

This resource is broken down into four parts:

1) Before Listening (Minds On): where students have the opportunity to connect to the topic with background knowledge, wonder about the topic and what they may learn while listening, and finally make a prediction of what they may learn through the episode.

2) During Listening: where students are prompted to identify key ideas as they listen, make connections between ideas, ask questions, and note any vocabulary or concepts that are new or difficulty for them to understand.

3) After Listening: where students are prompted to reflect on their learning and extend their learning by pursuing additional research on the topic or clarifying ideas that were confusing to them.

4) Questions for Further Consideration: there are ten complex discussion questions that allow students to dig a little deeper after listening. These can be assigned individually, or in groups, or students can be given choice to answer some of the questions that appeal to them. The ten questions cover the following topics and have guiding questions to prompt student thinking:

  • Author's Purpose
  • Tone and Style
  • Background Research
  • Ratings & Reviews
  • Conversation Moves
  • Genre Study
  • Critique
  • Ads & Audiences
  • Critical Literacy
  • Meta-cognition

Included in this resource is a detailed 4-point scoring rubric to assess the student's quality of thinking and completion of the listening log. Also included are some teacher suggestions for different ways you can set up the "Questions for Further Consideration" in your classroom.

Please take the time to leave me some feedback! This is a new resource and I really appreciate your ideas. I look forward to using the log in my own classroom, and as I update or edit the file, you will receive those changes if you have purchased it.

I hope you and your students enjoy :)
