This two week unit delves into the origins of film, from Thomas Edison's experiments through the Lumiere Brothers and into the first two decades of the film industry. I have developed this unit over time in my own high school-level film studies class and hope that it will be a valuable resource for teachers interested in the history of film. The unit inludes two study guide handouts (The Pioneers and Film Becomes a Business) along with teacher versions of the handouts (with answers), links to accompanying online videos, a quiz (with answer key) over the unit, and helpful books and websites on the topic. Other topics and films covered in this unit include George Melies and his film A Trip to the Moon, Edwin Porter and his film The Great Train Robbery, DW Griffith and his film The Birth of a Nation, the migration of the film industry to Hollywood in the nineteen-teens.
