Although our students have been learning about symmetry for years, the once basic skills becomes a lot more in-depth in 4th grade. These 24 task cards are differentiated to begin with the basic skills and then progressively require higher level thinking skills.
Cards 1-12 ask students to draw their own lines of symmetry on objects and shapes and name how many lines there are
Cards 13-16 show part of a figure with a line of symmetry and ask students to complete the other side of the figure
Cards 17-24 are a mixture of word problems in multiple choice format
I’ve also included an I can poster for the standard (4.6B) and two posters containing various shapes and letters (you can project these on your SMART board or make copies for students for centers or individual continued practice with finding lines of symmetry)
All you need to do is print, cut, laminate and shuffle cards then the options are endless:
-Have your students complete the cards at a center and record their answers on the recording key provided or get up and move around the room with a game of SCOOT
-Use as a ticket out the door, picking one out of the stack to complete as a quick check or spiral throughout the year
-Keep intact and assign a sheet for homework for the night or use as an assessment tool during small groups or intervention
-Great for fast finishers too!
Recording sheet was made so students don’t have to write on the task cards to draw their lines of symmetry. All objects and shapes are on the recording sheet for students to see and manipulate. Answer key is included for student self-check or teacher quick check.
