Vocabulary Squares are an excellent way for students to practice reading comprehension while thinking quickly about grammatical accuracy.
To play this game, divide your class into small groups--2 or 3 students per group (although you can play with larger groups, the students won't have to think as hard). This file is for ONE group so make as many copies as you have groups, cut out the squares and mix them up. I suggest that you use cardstock, laminate, and store in sandwich bags so you can use them year after year.
Students work in small groups to match the phrases or pictures on the edges of each card. The goal is to match the tops, bottoms, and sides of each card correctly so that students end up with a large 4X4 square.
This particular version of the game has students match the word for a family member (this game includes basic family members AND complicated family members like STEP FATHER, GREAT GRANDMOTHER, HALF SISTER) with a phrase that describes the relationship of that family member to the student.
