Product Description

Are your students hooked on Minecraft? Here's an activity where you can take their interest and teach them about symmetry all at the same time!

Your students will learn about the figures in Minecraft that have no line of symmetry, exactly 1 line of symmetry, or more than 1 line of symmetry. There are 3 hands-on projects to choose from where students can demonstrate their understanding of symmetry. You can use this as Project-Based Learning, centers, homework, or independent work.

This activity includes teacher directions, vocabulary poster, examples, 6 closing activity question cards, 3 project direction posters, and all the printables you will need for each project.

Just download, print, and you are ready to go!

This activity is aligned to TEK 4.6B (Supporting) and CC 4.G.A.3.

Note: This activity can be used for students who are above grade level in math.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1) Do teachers need to know how to play Minecraft?

No, the teacher does not need to be an expert. Having some familiarity with Minecraft is helpful. Ask your students to tell you about the game. Trust me, they won't stop talking to you about it! You can also do a quick search online to learn more about Minecraft.

2) Are there swords in Minecraft?

Yes, there are swords. In fact, there is TNT. I recommend you check in with students about what they plan to design for their projects. This is important to do with any project you assign. There are so many things from the game they can create that is appropriate for school. Always follow school policy.

4) Do students have to do all the projects?

Not at all. Students can do one or more.

5) Do students need to know how to play Minecraft to do these projects?

Not necessarily. It is good for students to have some background knowledge, but here is a great opportunity where kids can learn from one another. Have your "expert" kids teach other kids in the class about Minecraft.
