OVERVIEW: this document contains 10 sample Gatsby essays in response to the 2019 Idealism Q3 prompt, 0-9 score and rationale (old rubric), 0-6 score & rationale (*NEW* rubric).

MORE CONTEXT: At the AP English Literature & Composition Reading in 2019, I read 237 essays on The Great Gatsby and became somewhat of a connoisseur in reading and scoring Gatsby essays. After I returned from the Reading, I thought about how helpful it would be to have a 0-9 (and NEW 0-6) range of essays all on the same novel to show to students but also to use for PD with teachers.

These 10 samples are all in response to the 2019 Q3 Idealism prompt and all use a character from The Great Gatsby in their responses. I wrote all of the essays, and scored them using the old 0-9 rubric; there is one essay for each 0-9 score point. I also included rationale. Then, I re-scored the essays using the *NEW* 0-6 rubric and provided additional rationale.

It will be especially helpful for experienced AP Lit teachers to utilize this resource to compare the old & new rubrics for their own professional development. Students can benefit from looking at sample essays as well to reflect on their own writing.
