Product Description
I feel like I’m constantly telling my students “show your work,” “show your thinking,” “what operation should you do?” And they have so many tangles that they don’t know where to begin. That’s why I love using the model approach with strip diagrams. It gives the students something concrete to begin with to show their thinking and it visually helps them to “see” what operation should be used in the word problem.

In this activity pack you will get: 15 task cards, 2 games with a game board included and a sorting/matching activity. It's a perfect supplement to your problem solving unit!!

For the task cards:
-Cut and laminate the cards for repeated use at a center or keep them intact to make a “packet” of questions for each student (if you are using them at a center there is a recording sheet for students to record their answers on)
-All 15 cards cover a mixture of strip diagram skills from filling in given diagrams based on equations to answering multiple choice questions, and creating their own word problems based on a diagram

For the matching/sorting activity
-Print, preferably in color, cut, laminate and shuffle cards
-Students will sort the strip diagram cards under the headings “Addition/Subtraction or Multiplication/Division” depending on what the diagram is representing
-Use these as a warm up for the unit or a spiral review throughout the year to refresh students memory
-Answer key is provided

For the games (2 versions- one focusing on adding and subtracting and the other on multiplying and dividing digrams)
-Print, preferably in color, laminate or put in sheet protectors
-Students can use small game pieces or tiles to move along the game board and expos to fill in their strip diagrams (Each student can use their own strip diagram/spinner sheet or you can use 1 and share – either works fine)
-Grab 2 dice and a paper clip and pencil to use as a spinner
-Let the fun begin!
-Game can be used at a center, a fun review throughout the year or for fast finishers during the unit. Also, as an informal assessment of the skill.
