Product Description

Grade 7-10: In this activity, students will have a chance to read Debbie Spring's short story "The Kayak" and examine the short story elements within it, including: the plot diagram, setting, character, conflict, foreshadowing, symbolism and theme.

As they are working through this activity, they will be asked to reflect on the central message of the story and turn that message into a draft analytical paragraph after reviewing paragraph structure.

After they write their draft, they will be given the opportunity to self-assess against a checklist of paragraph criteria. Once they have self-assessed, examined effective and ineffective theme statements, then they will edit and revise their paragraphs and submit to you a polished, formal paragraph on the theme.

I hope your students enjoy this wonderful story and this task!
