This Common Core aligned lesson uses the text The Polar Express to engage students in thinking critically about figurative language (personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, and alliteration), symbol, and theme. Students also compare two versions of the text (clips from the movie and picture book). I recommend using the online version of the storybook at http://www.storylineonline.net/ with selected clips from the movie as you compare and contrast. Students, no matter how old, always love this book. I like to treat mine with cups of cocoa while having our discussion - coffee shop style.
