PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This Common Core aligned lesson uses the text The Watson's Go to Birmingham to motivate students in thinking deeply about author's purpose, figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification, cliche, and hyperbole), tone, and theme. This story allows children to learn about racism through the intelligent eyes of Kenny Watson as his family travels to Alabama for the summer.

Students also compare and contrast the written story with the film version (clips from the movie on YouTube and Netflix).

No matter the age, students will learn from this story and film about how the Watson family experienced racism in the South. The lessons learned in this story are unforgettable.
