This is a HUGE Newspaper Unit that I have not only created but implemented. My students loved it and got so much out of it! There is a lot that is included and I did my best to mention it all below. You can also download the preview for free to get a better idea although there is more that you cannot see.
~Brief Outline and Overview of how to spend each day (30 minutes)
~ Optional Parent Letter if using for RTII group or just to let parents know what is going on in class.
Creating a Newspaper Packet:
~12 page packet for starting up and learning about newspapers. Has table of contents, goes through purpose, genres, text features, sections etc that are found in newspapers. Also has a glossary of newspaper words for students to refer back to.
Reporter's Notebook Packet:
~22 page packet for students to record all of their 'assignments' in. Has table of contents, has five different assignments as well as a spot to record any optional assignments they pick up.
~12 page packet of 8 different optional assignments that students can do such as a sports article, poll, reviews and more! This was my students absolute favorite part :)
~Talk Like a Reporter Worksheet
~Newspaper Rubric to put on each handed in assignment
~Text Feature Poster to place in room
~Purpose of a Newspaper poster
~Star Reporter Incentive/Behavior Poster Template
~8 Posters describing kinds of articles to display in the room
~19 Fun and colorful vocab words to display in the room for student reference
~Idea booklet cover (4 covers on one 8.5X11 page). Just cut blank pages and staple to give students their own reporter's notebook!
The most helpful part may be the sample newspaper that I put in for you to look through. I put it in a picture format so that everyone would definitely be able to look. This was the newspaper that my (gifted) second graders did. So you can see that students at all levels can work on this great unit! Please excuse the blanks and occasional missing word. I blanked out some information :) Also included for use (if you have Microsoft Publisher) is the template newspaper. This is a 15 page document for you to create a newspaper for your students. It will make a full sized newspaper, but be warned you must cut a large sheet of white construction paper in half and put through the bypass tray of your copier. Quite easy and turns out amazing! You can always adjust it to fit your own needs as well.
I also invited in a local reporter to speak with my kids after we went over the basics and before we started writing. This really inspired them and the reporter was happy to come in!
There's a lot included and if you have any questions and/or find mistakes, needs something added, etc please just message me and I'll fix it or try to add it.
