This resource guides the students through three reads of the material, step by step. The reads can be done on 3 separate days or in 3 different manners (independent, partner, whole class etc.) for the sake of time. Below is a general outline that my close reading resources follow, although each passage may deviate some.
This passage covers the Causes and events leading to the American Revolution with a close reading strategy focusing on the following events:
-French and Indian War
-taxation without representation
-The Stamp Act
-the Tea Act
Day One: Cold Read- or a simple read for enjoyment. Students’ purpose for hearing the passage is for simple enjoyment.
Day Two: Vocabulary. On day two the reading purpose is to discover unknown words. Student can circle or highlight words they are unsure about. Use the "notes" section to draw pictures of and make connections with vocabulary. Have students share their notes with a partner. Reconvene as a whole class and record a master vocabulary list.
Day Three: On this day, ask the text dependent questions! On day three, reread the passages with a focus on text structure. Students are asked to infer, predict, explain, support, and describe in the text dependent question section.
