This resource is for the 5th grade NGSS Performance Expectation: 5-ESS1-2 Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows.
In this performance expectation, students will investigate the way that the Sun’s position affects the length and direction of shadows throughout the day. This lab allows students to model shadows inside at their lab tables. The student classwork has 2 pages to gain background knowledge, 1 page for setting up the lab, 2 pages for students to record their observations in a data table and create a graph, 2 pages of additional practice, and an exit ticket. There is also a video tutorial for setting up the experiment!
There is also a BONUS worksheet for an outdoor lab so students can measure their own shadows outside at different times of the day as well.
Before using this resource, students should already know that the earth rotates on its axis, and this causes day and night to occur.
