NGSS 5-PS1-2 Conservation of Matter Aligned 5E Lesson Plan is designed to take students on an engaging journey starting with movie scenes from the Wizard of Oz. Students view a movie clip and are asked to identify gases, solids, and liquids they see.

The students are then asked the most important question for NGSS 5-PS1-2: Does the total weight of substances change if they are heated, cooled, mixed together, or rearranged into different shapes? . The students are then asked to explore the answer to this question. During their journey through our explorations, explanation, and elaboration, students are asked to keep track of evidence that answers this question.

In the Exploration part of the journey, as the students perform each Exploration Lab, they must first form a hypothesis as to what they think will happen. They then perform the lab, answer questions, and Graph their results. Student Exploration Labs include:

1. Does Melting Ice Change Its Weight?
2. Does Melting Chocolate Change Its Weight?
3. Does Dissolving Salt in Water Change the Weight of the Water?
4. Does Gas have Weight?
5. Does Changing the Form of Paper Affect the Weight?
6. Does Changing the Shape of Play Dough Affect the Weight?


The Explanation part of the journey leads to an introductory reading on Atoms. This reading introduces atoms as the actual particles which are too small to be seen. This well illustrated two-page reading ends with questions to enhance student comprehension. A teacher answer key is included in this section.

In the Elaboration portion, students move on to a WebQuest on Atoms. Students are asked both fill-in and open-ended questions to build critical thinking skills. A teacher answer key is included in this section.

Your student’s journey ends with an Evaluation that circles back to the original questions asked in the Engagement portion of the lesson. Using the information, they collected in their Evidence Gathering Sheet as supporting evidence, students now come full circle and are asked to answer questions relating to the Engagement PowerPoint and support their answer with data and information they have collected on their journey. A teacher answer key is provided.
