This lesson plan is one of six that are also found in the Matter and Its Interactions Bundle.
In this performance expectation, the teacher will complete various demos that change matter (physical and chemical changes). Students will measure and graph the mass of the system before the change, and after the change to determine that matter is conserved when it changes form.
This lab is aligned to the 5th grade NGSS performance expectation:
5-PS1-2. Measure and graph quantities to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved.
The goal of this lesson is for students to be able to collect evidence to support the idea that weight/mass of matter does not change when matter is changes either chemically or physically.
This lesson should be taught after students know that matter is made of tiny particles called atoms, and after they can differentiate between physical and chemical changes. A lesson for physical and chemical changes can be found here:
