This lesson plan is one of six that are also found in the Matter and Its Interactions Bundle.
In this performance expectation, students will collect evidence that solids, liquids, and gases are all matter. Students will explain that gases and dissolved solids are still matter even when they are made up of particles too small to be seen. At the end of the lesson, students must determine ways to prove that sugar atoms are still present in the solution after they have been dissolved in water.
This lab is aligned to the 5th grade NGSS performance expectation:
5-PS1-1. Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.
This lesson is part of the "Matter and Its Interactions" unit. You can find a bundle of all six of the NGSS performance expectations for this unit here: NGSS Matter and Interactions
