Product Description
Aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), this activity provides a hands on approach to organic chemistry for advanced high school students (honors biology, chemistry, biochemistry, AP biology). The packet could be used without atomic modeling kits, and still be very valuable. However, I use the kits to helps students see 3-D, kinesthetic models of the macro-nutrients. So it is best to have access to a class set of atomic modeling kits for this lab. The packet included a full answer key.

The role that I have played, as the teacher, during this lab, is to circulate the room, helping students make sense of this difficult topic. It is up to you as to how much direct instruction/lecture you feel is necessary before or after this activity.

This packet explores the structure and function of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. It introduces students to the concepts of dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis reactions, and relates these macromolecules to the foods we consume.

B. SUGGESTED USES

Prior Knowledge: This activity is designed for students to be able to work through, and learn about the structure and function of some of the major organic macronutrients. It is best suited for more advanced classes: honors biology, organic chemistry, chemistry-based nutrition classes, etc. Students benefit from an understanding of covalent bonds, and what the ball and stick models represent (sticks represent share pair of electrons, while balls with peg represent the atoms themselves. Students should have an understanding of what organic chemistry studies, and the properties of the carbon atom that made it a good candidate to form large, complex, stable molecules. I often give them a background on some of the major functional groups that they will be seeing and using during the unit. NOTE: The packet does not ask students about nucleic acids, as they are usually an entire unit onto themselves.
