Develop a model to describe how food is rearranged through chemical reactions forming new molecules that support growth and/or release energy as this matter moves through an organism (cellular respiration and photosynthesis). It includes 5 questions or tasks total which can be edited, copied and pasted into various forms of assessments to align to the NGSS.

This set of questions require students to use Science and Engineering Practices as well as Crosscutting Concepts to demonstrate understanding of the Disciplinary Core Ideas. The SEPs and CCCs are listed for each PE. Keep in mind that the tasks require more time than a standard test question, therefore, there should be fewer questions on a test which allows for more time to solve the problems.
In areas on Earth that experience the season of Fall, you will notice that the leaves on some trees change color and drop to the ground. Over time, if the leaves are not picked up, they rot/decompose and disappear. Read the three models below (models provided in document) that answer the question, “Over time, what happens to leaves that fall from the trees?”
a. Which model do you most agree with and why?
b. How would temperature affect the model?
c. Draw a new model (or make revisions to one of the models listed above) and include any necessary parts to help explain what happens to the leaves.
