This resource contains quality, EDITABLE sample assessment questions and performance tasks for the Physical Science Performance Expectation MS-PS1-2 Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred. It includes 5 questions or tasks total which can be edited, copied and pasted into various forms of assessments to align to the NGSS. Links to other online resources to help teach the standard are also provided.

Use these sample questions for: pre-assessments, check-ins or quizzes, unit tests, and/or for your professional growth objectives!

The questions cover the 3 dimensions of the NGSS and include:

  • constructed response questions
  • performance tasks
  • questions with multiple components

This set of questions require students to use Science and Engineering Practices as well as Crosscutting Concepts to demonstrate understanding of the Disciplinary Core Ideas. The Performance Expectation related to engineering includes two design challenges and external links to documents. The SEPs and CCCs are listed for each PE. Keep in mind that the tasks require more time than a standard test question, therefore, there should be fewer questions on a test which allows for more time to solve the problems.

SAMPLE QUESTION:

Beckett and Ryan are conducting an experiment to observe what happens when two substances are combined. Beckett pours and measures substance X and while Ryan pours and measures substance Y. Together, they pour the substances in a baggie and zip it closed (you can name examples of substances if you like). Both are liquids before the experiment. During the experiment, they wrote their observations in the data table (provided in document). Answer the questions using their data as evidence.

a. Given the data, would you conclude that a physical or chemical change/reaction occurred when these two substances were combined? Use at least two pieces of evidence to support your answer.

b. Think about your response for question a. Explain whether the atoms rearranged after the experiment or not. Explain.
