It includes 5 questions or tasks total which can be edited, copied and pasted into various forms of assessments to align to the NGSS.

Use these sample questions for: pre-assessments, check-ins or quizzes, unit tests, and/or for your professional growth objectives!

The questions cover the 3 dimensions of the NGSS and include:

  • constructed response questions
  • performance tasks
  • questions with multiple components

This set of questions require students to use Science and Engineering Practices as well as Crosscutting Concepts to demonstrate understanding of the Disciplinary Core Ideas. The SEPs and CCCs are listed for each PE. Keep in mind that the tasks require more time than a standard test question, therefore, there should be fewer questions on a test which allows for more time to solve the problems.

SAMPLE QUESTION:

Students conducted an experiment to determine if the number of times they wrapped a wire around a nail would affect its magnetic strength. They connected each end of the wire to a battery and tested how many paperclips it could hold. They used a spring scale to measure the strength. Their results are recorded in the data table (included in document). Use this information to answer the questions below.

a. What relationship exists between the number of times the wire was wrapped and the strength?

b. What is the independent variable in this experiment?

c. Another group performed the same experiment and was not able to get any paper clips to lift off of the ground no matter how many times they wrapped the wire. Write two questions you would ask them about their experiment in order to try to understand what happened.

Ask questions about data to determine the factors that affect the strength of electric and magnetic forces. Examples of devices that use electric and magnetic forces could include electromagnets, electric motors, or generators. Examples of data could include the effect of the number of turns of wire on the strength of an electromagnet, or the effect of increasing the number or strength of magnets on the speed of an electric motor. Assessment about questions that require quantitative answers is limited to proportional reasoning and algebraic thinking.
