NEW! This resource contains quality, EDITABLE sample assessment questions and performance tasks for the Physical Science Performance Expectation MS-PS4-1. Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave. It includes 5 questions or tasks total which can be edited, copied and pasted into various forms of assessments to align to the NGSS. Links to other online resources to help teach the standard are also provided.

Use these sample questions for: pre-assessments, check-ins or quizzes, unit tests, and/or for your professional growth objectives!

The questions cover the 3 dimensions of the NGSS and include:

  • constructed response questions
  • performance tasks
  • questions with multiple components

This set of questions require students to use Science and Engineering Practices as well as Crosscutting Concepts to demonstrate understanding of the Disciplinary Core Ideas. The SEPs and CCCs are listed for each PE. Keep in mind that the tasks require more time than a standard test question, therefore, there should be fewer questions on a test which allows for more time to solve the problems.

SAMPLE QUESTION:

Students were experimenting with the loudness of sound. They placed a piece of foil over a radio speaker and sprinkled rice on the foil. They wanted to measure how the amplitude of a wave is related to its energy, so they observed how high the rice bounced on the foil at various volumes. Use this information to answer the questions.

a. Which data table below (provided in document) most accurately represents what their data probably looked like and why?

b. Draw a model of a set of waves at low volume and a set of waves at high volume. Rest positions have already been provided for you. Label the amplitude and explain how it is related to the energy of a wave.
