This activity is based around the information that middle school students need to know about atoms using the NGSS (but of course can be used in any grade as a precursor to chemistry and atoms). It was developed as a pre-activity to molecules. This activity introduces students to different atoms and elements without going into detail on their structure (electrons, protons, neutrons).
Students research the following information:
-a picture of the atom
-how common the atom is in nature
-what other atoms this atom can bond to
-the color that represents the atom in ball and stick models.
-the actual size of the atom
-where it is on the periodic table
I have included:
-A grading rubric
-A chart for classmates to fill in as others present
-A picture of the example I show my students
-my lesson plans
-resource websites to get students started
This activity takes three days, however I also recommend some time for students to make corrections based on teacher feedback.
This activity is in Word format and can easily be edited (including to be a poster if technology is not available).
