I have spent almost 2 decades figuring out how to get middle schoolers to understand the difference between a chemical and physical change and this product is it! It’s quick, easy prep, student centered, engaging, cooperative learning and fun! My “States of Matter Computer Lab” and “Dancing Raisins Lab” would be seamless with this card sort!
You will need to print page 3 for the informational text. After reading, students do the fill in the blank using the word bank while watching “Chemical Changes: Crash Course Kids #19.2”. You will also need to print pages 4-13 per group. Then cut pages 7, 8, 12 and 13 into individual squares/cards per group. Place the cards from pages 7-8 in a separate envelope from pages 12-13. So one envelope has “Clues for Chemical Changes and Clues for Physical Changes.” And the other envelope has “Examples for Chemical Changes and Examples for Physical Changes.” After this prep you’re done!
I would first have the students sort the “Clues for a Chemical Change/Physical Change” and discuss their rationale as groups (some will be in the wrong column but it’s great for class discussion), then have them present to the class why they put them in that order. Then I would have them sort the “Examples of Chemical and Physical Changes” cards and discuss. I like to put the keys up on my document camera or overhead and discuss as a class the rational for why the cards are sorted under the two columns.
