Procedure writing is challenging for many students. This activity can help by allowing students to follow steps from procedures that they wrote. The procedures will explain how to measure the density of different types of matter(small stone, cube, sample of sand, and a sample of water).
This can be done as a(n):
• Assessment Tool: This can assess students’ knowledge and ability of measuring
different forms of matter.
• Group Lab Activity: Students work in groups to write and collect data with each
• Individual Lab Activity: Student can work individually to complete the lab.
Triple Beam Balance(or another scale)
Different Sized Cubes
***If you have purchased the Measuring Matter Activity Stations
lesson from my store:
Before: This can be used to find out student’s previous knowledge about measuring matter, and be an introduction to the activity stations.
After: This can be assessment of what students learned during each activity station
Next Generation Science Standards
MS-ETS1-2. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
MS- ETS1-3. Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
