This simple NGSS middle school project challenges students to build compounds out of junk from home to address the standard MS-PS1-1. Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.
Students have to build a compound, create a key, and provide 3 interesting facts to share with the class. I usually hold a Junk Compound Museum the day they are due. The kids LOVE it and learn a lot about different structures of compounds and their uses. They can be as simple as carbon dioxide or as complex as caffeine!
This lesson includes a rubric for grading!
It is aligned to the following NGSS Next Generation Science Standard Performance Expectation:
MS-PS1-1. Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures
