This is a GREAT introduction to teaching kids how to draw and revise models. Because scientific knowledge is being constantly revised in the light of new evidence, it is critical to teach kids how ideas change as information comes to light. It requires one Hand Boiler per student. They are very easy to buy online! I included a link to ordering them in the lesson...
Students draw an initial model of what is happening inside the Hand Boiler when they hold the bottom and top bulbs. Then, the students are given 2 pieces of evidence in order to evaluate and revise their original ideas. Students learn the importance of evidence, modeling, and revision of ideas. It's the perfect inquiry-based lesson! An answer key is included!
Here is the NGSS Next Generation Science Standard Performance Expectation:
MS-PS1-4. Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed.
