Lesson Plan 2. Astronomy and the Scientific Method (with Science Literacy Activity #2 - Astronomy and the Scientific Method)
Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
• Describe the essence of the scientific method.
• Explain how astronomers use the scientific method in their studies.
• Identify the differences between a set of hypotheses and a scientific theory.
• Provide examples of the experiments conducted on cosmic objects other than the Earth.
• Explain the purpose of scientific models.
• Provide examples of various scientific models.

• Explain why making astronomical observations that support or discard a hypothesis can be very challenging.

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
• Describe the origins of astrology.
• Describe the scientific method.
• Explain the difference between astronomy and astrology.
• Explain why astrology falls into the category of pseudoscience.
• Provide observational evidence that disproves the traditional view of the zodiac.

Lesson Plan 4. Measuring Distances in the Solar System and Beyond (with Science Literacy Activity #4 - Measuring Distances in the Solar System and Beyond)
Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
• Identify the fundamental unit of length in the metric system.
• Convert meters to kilometers.
• Explain why the SI system does not work well when we measure distances between the planets in the Solar System.
• Define the astronomical unit (AU).
• Convert kilometers to astronomical units (AU).
• Define a light year.
• Define a parsec.
• Compare distances between the Sun and other stars to the distance between the Sun and the Earth.
