NGSS Electrolysis Lab (Balancing Chemical Equations) HS PS1-7 Chemistry in the Earth Systems unit 3

Students will use solar panels to generate electricity to separate hydrogen from oxygen in water. As the reaction occurs, students will observe that twice as much hydrogen gas forms compared to oxygen gas leading to a discussion about balancing chemical equations and conservation of mass.

Reaction could also be done as a teacher demonstration and take data together as a class if you only want to buy one reaction chamber.

Reaction could also be done using two pencils connected to a 9 volt battery, however this method is tricky to collect gas formed, but can be done with inverted test tubes, making the experiment much cheaper!

  • LED Bulb 100-150W Equivalent
  • Distilled Water
