This is a PERFECT way for students to learn about erosion as well as for you to assess student knowledge on erosion! It is a complete and thorough project (18 pages) with absolutely no prep work for the teacher for seven days!!! It includes the project directions, worksheets for each group, timeline, group outline, expectations and tips, rubric, and a reflection related to costs/benefits and future improvements!!
This project requires students to work/research in groups of 3-5 although it is completely revisable. Each group is assigned a different scenario related to erosion (Ex: sinkholes, wind, running water, etc.) Students have to brainstorm, research and design a new solution to the problem: How can we conserve soil in various areas to prevent property destruction, loss of habitat, food shortage, and/or death? Once students research and build a prototype, they will pitch it to the class similar to the show SHARK TANK! You can use videos from Youtube to model for them! Information about the Engineering and Design Process according to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is also provided.
This project covers the following NGSS Performance Expectations and Standards:
MS-ESS3-1. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how the uneven distributions of Earth’s mineral, energy, and groundwater resources are the result of past and current geoscience processes.
MS-ETS1-1. Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
