In this performance assessment, students use tools and materials to design and build a device to solve the problem of communicating over a distance. Students build a string telephone and investigate how sound travels through the device. Students are given a design challenge to redesign the string telephone to make it more effective in order to demonstrate their ability to construct explanations and design solutions. Then students act as engineers to create and test a device that uses sound or light to send messages over a distance.This assessment is designed to provide an opportunity for students to behave like engineers that systematically analyze materials and processes in order to create things for the benefit of humanity. Communications engineers are focused on sound and creating technology to transmit sound effectively.

This assessment is designed for use as a performance assessment after lessons on sound and light have been taught.
