This performance assessment is designed for Grade 1 Physical Science 4-3 Light Energy
Next Generation Science Standards: Waves and Their Applications in Technologies Transformation
1-PS4-3. Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the effect of placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light. (Clarification Statement: Examples of materials could include those that are transparent (such as clear plastic), translucent (such as wax paper), opaque (such as cardboard), and reflective (such as a mirror). (Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include the speed of light).
Students gather evidence to answer the question, “What Materials Transmit Light?” in this assessment. It begins with a whole class activity to review light energy and how it interacts with materials. Vocabulary with words for a word wall is included. This review is followed with an individual assessment in which students conduct tests to determine if different materials placed in a beam of light let all, some, or none of the light through. Students collect data (evidence), analyze and interpret the data and then justify the evidence by answering 3 questions.
Teaching tips, an instruction sheet for a center, a template for set up, student recording pages, a rubric for scoring, teacher background, science notes, large vocabulary words, and an answer key are included.
