Plant and Animal Structures and Processes
Use Biomimicry to Design a Solution to a Human Problem
Grade 1 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
1-LS1-1. Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.*
In this series of activities/assessments students use biomimicry to design solutions to human problems.
The series of activities begins with a whole class review in which students explore Velcro and learn how it was designed to mimic burs getting stuck in fur. Then they brainstorm plans for using ideas from nature to design protective gear for riding a bicycle, skateboard, or using some other equipment.
Next, students read Plant and Animal Parts PDF book for Science Notes to get ideas for decorating a bag to protect a "Hidden Treasure" placed in the bag.
Finally, students select a problem to solve using biomimicry from a set of 6 Problem-solving cards.
