NGSS Grade 2 Physical Science Matter and its Interactions
2-PS1-2. Analyze data obtained from testing different materials to
determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for
an intended purpose.*
The assessment begins with a whole class activity to activate prior knowledge and practice generating ideas about properties of matter, specifically boats and water. This can be conducted in small groups or as an interactive demonstration. In the individual assessment, students test different materials in water, gather and analyze their data to determine which materials would be best to build a boat and carry passengers (pennies). They then choose those materials, build and test their boats, gather and analyze more data, and redesign a boat.
The three dimensions addressed are are (1) Science and Engineering Practice of Analyzing and Interpreting Data, (2) the Disciplinary Core ideas of Structure and Properties of Matter, and (3) the Crosscutting Concepts of Cause and Effect and Influence of Science, Engineering and Technology on Society and the Natural World.
This assessment is designed for use after a study unit on Matter and Its Interactions- Properties of Matter
Included in this packet:
