Students observe patterns to plan and conduct an investigation to classify fabric samples in this assessment and rubric aligned to the *Next Generation Science Standards. The assessment begins with a whole class review of the properties of matter followed by an individual assessment in which students investigate the properties of fabrics and classify fabric samples into groups based on the properties that can be seen and felt. The assessment culminates in the use of patterns to create a collage with the fabrics. The three dimensions assessed are (1) the scientific and engineering practice of planning and carrying out investigations; (2) the disciplinary core idea of the structure and properties of matter; and (3) the crosscutting concept of patterns.
