Students ask questions to determine cause and effect relationships of electric interactions between two objects not in contact with each other in this assessment and rubric aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. The assessment begins with a whole class review of electrical interactions followed by an individual assessment in which students investigate static electricity by putting a charge on a balloon and holding it above gelatin to observe electrical interactions. The three dimensions assessed are (1) the scientific practice of asking questions; (2) the disciplinary core idea of types of interactions; and (3) the crosscutting concept of cause and effect.
