Ease your mind in covering 4th grade NGSS standards for Earth and Human Activity. The broad standard had been unpacked to reveal all sub-categories of instruction and high stakes testing. The unit begins with introducing non-renewable energy sources of fossil fuel and fissile materials. Students are challenged to understand the environmental effects of taking these fuels from the earth. Included is a mining activity using chocolate chip cookies, which demonstrates the destruction left behind when chocolate chips are mined from the cookies. Students then research the hazards created when the earth's natural state is disturbed causing events that destroy the environment, habitats, and all forms of life. The students carry what they learn into an engineering lab with jello, small marshmallows and toothpicks to design earthquake resistant buildings. Finally, students hypothesize about renewable forms of energy such as sunlight, water (hydro-energy) and wind; and how these sources can be harvested to replace the limited supply of fossil fuels.
