NGSS Grade 4: Earth and Human Activity
4-ESS3-2. Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans.
The assessment begins with a whole class activity to activate prior knowledge and practice generating ideas. Here, students act as civil engineers as they construct models of buildings and conduct tests to find out how well their structures withstand an earthquake. In the individual assessment, students develop an engineering project to address a problem and reduce the impact caused by natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, or volcanoes.
The three dimensions addressed are (1) the scientific practices of Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions, (2) the disciplinary core ideas of Natural Hazards and Designing Solutions to Engineering Problems
(3) the crosscutting concepts of Cause and Effect and Influence of Science, Engineering and Technology on Society and the Natural World.
This assessment is designed for use after a study unit on Natural Earth Processes and Natural Hazards.
