Next Generation Science Standards Performance Assessment
Grade 5 3-5-ETS1 Engineering Design
Students who demonstrate understanding can:
3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
Have your students use the steps of Engineering Design. In this series of lessons, students build a kaleidoscope; identify and define the need for an improved kaleidoscope; describe and analyze the kaleidoscope system; develop possible solutions for an improved kaleidoscope; optimize their design solutions; build and refine prototypes; and finalize and share their design solutions. These activities assess the Engineering Practice of Defining Problems; the Disciplinary Core Idea of Defining and Delimiting Engineering Problems; and the Crosscutting Concept of the Influence of Engineering Technology, and Science in Society and the Natural World.
The Engineering Design flow chart, student recording pages, teacher background, teaching procedure, and rubrics for scoring are all included in this bundle.
